Did you know food is not only used in your body to satisfy your hunger pangs, but also as information. What food you eat can tell your body “all is good” or “it’s not good and you need to do something about this situation now!!” When all is not good, your body will give you signs (aka symptoms) like pain, bloating, anxiety, headaches, fatigue and more to make sure you don’t do that or eat that again.
If this is a one time occurrence, your body has the ability to heal and move on quickly. But if no change is made and you continue with eating the food that gives the information that all is not good, your symptoms will persist and get louder. They may even move to another area of the body. You will end up seeing multiple specialty doctors for each organ system that isn’t functioning correctly.
Suffering with symptoms zaps your energy and steals your motivation!
Holistic Dietitian
That is why I became a holistic dietitian and began functional nutrition training. I intuitively knew the symptoms the women seeking my help were suffering from weren’t separate, but they were all connected. When I started listening to their stories, each woman had a root cause woven throughout her story.
Holistic Wellness
Holistic wellness is a way of practicing healthcare and wellness care. Holistic wellness is a way of looking at you as a whole system, not many separate systems. Instead of seeing multiple specialists for each organ system that isn’t functioning correctly, one holistic wellness practitioner can help you with it all. Each organ system interacts with each other. If there is a problem in one organ system, there is most likely a problem in another organ system. For example, almost half of those diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome have also been diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression. The role of the holistic wellness practitioner is to find the root cause of the problem and help you resolve it.

Holistic Eating for Beginners
One of the biggest root causes is what you eat. Food is more than just to fill you up and make hunger pangs go away. It provides nutrients to every cell in your body. It also provides information that will tell you to create inflammation or decrease inflammation. I love to tell clients that the holistic wellness journey begins with holistic eating.
5 Foods That Steal Your Energy and Worsen Your Health
The five foods below are the most common foods I find women eat while thinking they are making a healthy choice.
- Vanilla yogurt. You’ve heard that flavored yogurt isn’t healthy, so you just buy vanilla. I’m sorry to say but vanilla is also flavored. Vanilla is sweetened with sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or an alternative sweetener making the amount of total carbohydrates double that of plain yogurt. There are usually also flavorings and preservatives in vanilla yogurt.
- Granola bars. Although granola bars are thought to be a quick and healthy snack, they are no more than glorified candy bars. With anywhere from 15-45 grams of carbohydrates, and typically only a third of that amount in protein, your blood sugar will be spiked telling your pancreas to release insulin which then signals you to store fat.
- Nut milk. We have all been sold on this one! I’m not going to lie and tell you regular milk is any better, but the ingredients in nut milks can be harmful to your digestive system and again, can spike your blood sugar.
- Wine. I really do hate being the bearer of bad news, but wine is not a health food. Alcohol (wine included) disrupts your gut microbiome, increases cardiovascular disease risk, increases high blood pressure, and has many more side effects.
- Cereal. Ok no one really thinks this is healthy but I have to put it in here because so many people have it because they don’t think it’s THAT bad. Well it kinda is. Cereal (like all the others on this list) is really high in carbohydrate and low in protein. That will spike blood sugar and insulin and create fat storage and inflammation.
I hope this information helps you! For me, each of these foods were in my daily diet before I learned more and learned why to avoid them.
