A trip to the doctor’s office or a visit to the pharmacy to fill your prescription is commonplace for Americans. Maybe you’re in this situation. When your symptoms first started, you went to your doctor hoping for a cure. But now, you are fed up with having to take a pill everyday. You’ve gotten caught in the hamster wheel of the medical industry and have become frustrated with not getting the answers you’re hoping for. You just want to feel better without taking something. There is an answer, you’re just not looking in the right place. Instead of the medical system, holistic wellness is what you need.
Don’t get me wrong. Doctors are not bad…some of you reading this are doctors (I love ya’ll too!). But the doctors I’ve spoken with about this are fed up too. They got into the medical profession to make a difference. They wanted to help people feel better and give answers. They get frustrated because they don’t have the time or tools to truly help.
Holistic Wellness…What Is It?
It takes holistic wellness to heal from the inside out. When symptoms arise, your body is lacking something, and it’s not a lack of whatever medication you’re on. Holistic wellness is rooted in finding the root cause of the problem. Once found, removing it and giving the body the basics of healing are the key principles.
How to Implement Holistic Wellness
Root causes are many and working with a knowledgeable holistic wellness professional can be important to finding your root cause. But for starters, there are some things you can implement to “clear the muddy waters” and make it easier to find deeper root causes.
3 Holistic Wellness Practices to Easily Implement
You Are What You Eat
Holistic wellness will always start with what you eat. What you put in your mouth is crucial to how often you visit the doctor for chronic illnesses and how many medications you are taking. Start you holistic wellness journey by cleaning up your diet.
Eat real food. Ideally, your food shouldn’t have an ingredient list, but if it does, aim for as few ingredients as possible. I’m not big on counting anything (because I think that becomes an obsession), but if you feel the need to count, count how many servings of veggies you have each day. Aim for six to nine servings.
Slow Down
Living this life blowing and going, not slowing down to live in the present is something we as Americans live by. I was recently in another country and I loved the slowness of the culture. Nothing opened until round 11am and even then, people seemed slow to get going. When eating out, the servers expected you to sit and chat for much longer than we were used to; we always had to ask for the check. The locals eating around us were there for community. They savored it and didn’t take advantage of the time but lingered and soaked it all in.
Because I’m now learning how to play the piano (I know that’s a crazy thing to start learning now…but I am), it’s been brought to my awareness, that if I slow my thoughts, I’m able to learn better. If I can slow the chatter and only focus on the present note and not look frantically ahead to “be ready” for the next three notes, I’ll make less mistakes.
Life is the same. Yes it may be important to look ahead but not to live in the future hurrying through the present. If we can only slow down, be present and be fully aware of the experience we have in the moment, holistic wellness will become easier.
Relax…No Need to Panic
Fear drives panic. Panic drives the nervous system into fight or flight and the inability to relax. When the nervous system can’t relax, multiple body systems can’t function properly. Digestion suffers. Sleep suffers. Pain can become chronic. Anxiety worsens. And much more.
When implementing holistic wellness practices, meditation and mindfulness are great tools to use. But as with anything new, it is a practice. You won’t be good at it immediately. That’s why they call it practice. You get better with every practice.
