Can you believe we are in September already?! Personally, I’m thankful for the soon to be cooler weather 🤞 As I’m writing this right now, we’ve had some cooler mornings, making starting the day outside manageable. And if holistic wellness is your goal, being outside is a must.
What Is Holistic Wellness?
Holistic wellness is an approach to medicine that addresses the whole person and all areas of their life including physical, mental/emotional, spiritual and social. It’s a way of teaching you how to practice healthy habits to heal and thrive. Holistic wellness practitioners have been trained to spend time asking specific questions to find the root cause for each person’s health problems.
You have to remove the root cause to get well and that is exactly what holistic wellness is… root cause resolution. Holistic wellness allows practitioners to practice in a way that digs deep into a person’s lifestyle to find the cause and remove it for healing. It is a way of using tools provided on this earth as medicine to seek out the root cause of symptoms and address a person as a whole, not just a set of symptoms.
How Is Holistic Wellness Different than Traditional Wellness/Medicine?
Seeing each person individually and not just a set of symptoms is what sets holistic wellness apart from traditional medicine.
Traditional medicine is symptom management and medicine based. You go to the doctor when you have a problem, get prescribed a medicine, go back to the doctor when that medicine isn’t working anymore, or you have another problem, then repeat the cycle.
If that doctor doesn’t know the answer, he/she will refer you to a specialist. Traditional medicine sees the body as separate systems that don’t interconnect, therefore specialists are needed for each system. When you have a health concern with one system, traditional medicine sees this as a problem only in that system. This forces you to see multiple specialists because in most cases, there are multiple symptoms in multiple systems.
Holistic Wellness for Beginners
When taking a holistic wellness approach, you are looked at as a whole being, rather than separate parts. You aren’t going to specialist after specialist, one practitioner can help with each symptom. But then again, holistic wellness does not address the symptom; finding the root cause addresses the symptoms.
Holistic Wellness Step 1
Become your own advocate. The traditional medicine model is designed to make you think you have to see the doctor and get medicine to get well. But in reality, your body is very smart and designed to heal when given the proper nutrients and environment.
Holistic Wellness Step 2
Once you become your own advocate and you choose how you want to heal, start looking at what you are eating. The food industry and the standard American diet are making us sick and weak. Start with removing the processed food and sweet drinks (regular and diet). Once you’ve removed that, increase your fresh fruits, vegetables and water.
Holistic Wellness Step 3
The lymphatic system needs movement to remove toxins and detoxification pathways use sweat to remove toxins. Movement, exercise and sweating are important for removing what the body needs to get rid of.
Holistic Wellness Step 4
There are so many benefits to being outside including mental and physical benefits. Breathing in fresh air, getting sunshine on your skin, and touching the ground with your bare feet recharge and energize your body. The holistic wellness practice of just getting outside can be done with or without movement.
Holistic Wellness Step 5
Sleep is a must for following holistic wellness practices. Studies show our bodies need at least 7.5 hours of sleep each night to repair and heal.
