Many of you reading this have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease so you know exactly what an autoimmune attack looks like and feels like in your body. I have never been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease so I can’t completely relate on a personal level. I have helped lots of people heal from their autoimmune disease and overcome autoimmune attacks. I also have several symptoms that if allowed, would probably turn into a full-blown autoimmune disease.
Before I knew better (when I was in high school, college and within a few years of graduating), I ate about like most Americans…a standard American diet…it was very SAD 😜. I may have eaten a few more veggies and “healthier” processed food, but I was completely addicted to sweets! And my body was screaming at me to stop. My gut was a wreck, I wore a brace on my wrists because they hurt so bad, and my anxiety was stopping me from living the life I wanted to live.
I knew what I was doing was leading me to a life I didn’t want and that’s when I found functional nutrition. I learned how to heal my body using food as my medicine and my breath as my calming force. Now my gut is happy, I achieve the dreams I have without anxiety, and I couldn’t tell you where those wrist braces are anymore!!
What Is An Autoimmune Attack
An autoimmune attack is a worsening of symptoms of your autoimmune disease, or diseases. The attack can feel sudden and feel like it’s out of the blue. You may feel like you are on a good path and you are suddenly hit with debilitating fatigue, pain, brain fog, digestive problems, etc.
What Causes An Autoimmune Attack
Although you may not know what causes your autoimmune attacks, your body knows what’s going on and responds. There are lots of triggers, or root causes, that precipitate an autoimmune attacks. I like to do what I call “clearing the muddy waters” to find root causes.
How to Identify Root Causes of Your Autoimmune Attack
When starting the process of root cause identification, you should start with the big things that we know cause problems in people: diet, stress and environment.
Is Your Diet Leading to Your Autoimmune Attacks?
We know the standard American diet is a problem. When eating like a typical American, your body doesn’t receive proper nutrients to function properly, making all processes a little harder complete. The standard American diet leads to inflammation, gut dysbiosis (imbalance in gut bacteria), leaky gut, anxiety, joint pain, sinus problems, headaches and migraines, weight gain, and much more.
Is Your Stress Level Leading to Your Autoimmune Attacks?
We don’t want autoimmune attacks to thrive but they thrive in stressful situations! Stress tends to keep your nervous system in fight or flight instead of rest and digest. When you remain tense, you can’t heal and you become more susceptible to autoimmune attacks.
Is Your Environment Leading to Your Autoimmune Attacks?
When your body comes in contact with something toxic or just something it needs to get out, it detoxes that substance one of four ways. Those detox pathways are through your stools, urine, breath and sweat. The unhealthier your environment, the more your body has to get rid of toxic substances. The detox pathways can become blocked, overloaded or sluggish leading to a toxic buildup that increases the chances of an autoimmune attack.
How to Heal the Root Cause of Your Autoimmune Attack
By clearing the muddy waters of your diet, environment and stress level, symptoms can be lessened making a more visible path to other more hidden root causes. Usually by changing these factors, autoimmune attacks are very few and far between allowing your body to heal.
