Right now, you may be thinking I’m crazy because who can have energy in this heat (if you’re not in the south, you don’t know what I’m talking about). My car literally said it was 117° yesterday!! I’m not talking about heat fatigue, I’m talking about that can’t get through the day without multiple cups of coffee kind of fatigue. That feeling of being run down but you still have to push through to keep your job. Let’s talk about that kind of fatigue and how to boost energy levels naturally.
What Causes Fatigue
Most of my clients come to me with a low level of energy. Everyone is different in what causes their lack of energy but most can boost energy naturally with changes in their diet and adjustments in their lifestyle. You know the saying, “You are what you eat” right? That saying is true. What you eat gets broken down into usable nutrients to go to healing, repair, cell structure and energy. Every process in your body needs energy. Your body will use the energy available to first sustain life, then give what’s left to power you through your activities. If you aren’t getting the right nutrients in your diet and your lifestyle habits are draining your energy, then you won’t have enough energy to sustain your everyday activities.
Nutrients That Boost Energy Levels Naturally
All food has energy. One of the first things I do with my clients is to help them start viewing food as sustenance and energy. Yes, you may view and use food for social gatherings and for an emotional crutch; but that’s not what your body uses food for. Food is used in the body as fuel. If you don’t put the right fuel in your car, your car breaks down and you can’t go anywhere. The same principle applies to your body. If you don’t put the right food/fuel in your body, your body starts to break down and you have fatigue.
You have lots of options available to you for boosting energy levels naturally. Start with one thing and move on to the next after your new habit has become established.
B Vitamins to Boost Energy Naturally
B Vitamins don’t have energy themselves, but they act as helpers to pull energy out of the carbohydrates, fats and proteins you eat. Boost your energy levels naturally by eating more foods with B vitamins and/or by taking B vitamin supplements. This is my favorite B vitamin complex supplement. Foods high in B vitamins include: salmon, eggs, meat, poultry, leafy greens, avocados, legumes, whole grains, and mushrooms.
Complex Carbohydrates to Boost Energy Naturally
Complex carbohydrates boost energy naturally in three ways: they provide B vitamins to help pull energy out of food, they help maintain steady blood sugar levels, and they themselves have energy. Your body uses all carbohydrates as energy. The difference in the complex carbohydrates and the simple carbohydrates is the rate in which your body burns through the energy. Complex carbohydrates provide a slower, longer lasting and steadier energy source than simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are real, whole food sources and simple carbohydrates are processed junk food.
Maintaining Steady Blood Sugar to Boost Energy Naturally
When your blood sugar swings high and low all day because of what you are eating and drinking (high sugar and simple carbohydrate food and drinks), this takes a lot of energy creating fatigue. Maintaining a steady blood sugar throughout the day is key to boosting energy levels naturally.
Quality Sleep Hygiene to Boost Energy Naturally
You will not have energy if you don’t get quality sleep. Sleep quality is affected by your daily habits, your caffeine intake during the day, your stimulation in the hours leading up to sleep, and the environment of your bedroom. Evaluate your sleep routine and habits and make appropriate changes to boost energy levels naturally.
